Why No Livestream? Avoiding Mission Creep and Preventing Cinestance

I'm talking about Mission Creep, the Observer Effect. and Cinestance. Sounds pretty weird. It's not that weird. It's not that important anyway. Just another in my daily podcasting workout. Please consider actually leaving a review, email, or voicemail for me over the holiday. I am alone and lonely.

WEBVTT 1 00:00:05.519 --> 00:00:12.150 Daily emotions for November twenty four. Today I was thinking about a lot of 2 00:00:12.189 --> 00:00:15.910 times people say, Hey, why don't you do why don't you live stream, 3 00:00:16.109 --> 00:00:20.390 like as in video? Sometimes people say why don't you go live etc. 4 00:00:21.899 --> 00:00:24.620 And a lot of it has to do with the fact that I wanted 5 00:00:24.699 --> 00:00:29.820 to do a podcast. So I'm doing a podcast, podcast, audio. 6 00:00:30.820 --> 00:00:37.490 And a lot of people fall victim to this thing called mission creep where, 7 00:00:37.689 --> 00:00:42.170 instead of focusing on the thing they intended to start, say a podcast, 8 00:00:43.130 --> 00:00:46.770 they start adding things. Oh and we can also do this, we can 9 00:00:46.850 --> 00:00:49.850 have a we can put video, we can do a video and Oh, 10 00:00:49.890 --> 00:00:53.079 we can have a merch line and then we can maybe take it on to 11 00:00:53.200 --> 00:00:57.520 or and go play in bars and clubs. So this is what is called 12 00:00:57.679 --> 00:01:02.159 mission creep, and project management, where your one thing is to do the 13 00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:06.629 thing you started to do. Killer, perfect, great, exceptional. With 14 00:01:06.829 --> 00:01:11.750 mission creep, people stop focusing on the thing they intended to do and start 15 00:01:11.750 --> 00:01:15.030 adding tasks. So this causes two things to happen. It delays the project, 16 00:01:15.590 --> 00:01:19.620 which is no Bueno, and project management, you don't want to delay 17 00:01:19.620 --> 00:01:23.659 a project because the client wanted and paid for that one thing. So when 18 00:01:23.700 --> 00:01:27.579 your mission starts to creep, you're starting to add cost you're starting to like 19 00:01:27.739 --> 00:01:33.689 just confuse the the whole project in general. And the second thing that typically 20 00:01:33.689 --> 00:01:37.650 happens is quality suffers. So if somebody is not willing to put in the 21 00:01:37.769 --> 00:01:42.569 time to do the first thing they had planned to do well and then instead 22 00:01:42.730 --> 00:01:48.480 starts adding additional tasks or features of the project, they're not going to do 23 00:01:48.599 --> 00:01:52.280 those well either. So what happens is people want to start a podcast and, 24 00:01:52.519 --> 00:01:57.040 instead of focusing on quality audio and working on their voice, whatever it 25 00:01:57.120 --> 00:02:00.879 means to them, some people want a lot of listeners, some people want 26 00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:06.069 sponsors and things like that. So until that's completely great, it's been my 27 00:02:06.189 --> 00:02:09.590 experience that you should keep focusing on that instead of letting your mission creep, 28 00:02:10.110 --> 00:02:15.430 because what happens then is you have a halfass show. So if your audio 29 00:02:15.550 --> 00:02:17.659 wasn't that good on your podcast and then you add video, well, chances 30 00:02:17.699 --> 00:02:21.860 are your video isn't going to be that good either. And if your vocal 31 00:02:21.860 --> 00:02:25.699 quality or your delivery sucked on a simple podcast, well, adding video is 32 00:02:25.780 --> 00:02:30.050 not going to make it any better. You're going to end up with a 33 00:02:30.210 --> 00:02:36.009 halfassed the video show great, just what the world means more of. So 34 00:02:36.169 --> 00:02:39.969 that's reason number one. I don't do video streams or go live or things 35 00:02:40.009 --> 00:02:45.000 like that. Typically is because it's mission creep. I have a focus and 36 00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:50.439 I think it's important, especially for me, to stay focused on the task 37 00:02:50.520 --> 00:02:53.479 at hand, the thing I plan to do. I got to persistent, 38 00:02:53.639 --> 00:02:57.800 keep moving through it until I get it done to my personal liking. But 39 00:02:57.960 --> 00:03:01.509 that was more of an afterthought. The real reason I don't do video is 40 00:03:01.590 --> 00:03:07.430 because I come from a TV background and filmmaking and there's a a tea. 41 00:03:07.509 --> 00:03:12.629 There's a thing in both TV and science. In science there's a thing called 42 00:03:12.710 --> 00:03:17.419 the observer effect, where the thing that you are studying changes simply by the 43 00:03:17.500 --> 00:03:24.580 fact that you're observing it. So you think instantly sentient beings like humans observing 44 00:03:24.620 --> 00:03:28.650 other humans. That's one way, but this it can gets down to even 45 00:03:28.650 --> 00:03:34.009 data. If data observes something else, the thing it's observing will react based 46 00:03:34.050 --> 00:03:38.210 on even data looking at it. Point being, The observer effect is not 47 00:03:38.330 --> 00:03:45.039 just humans or animated objects. The Observer effect could be a number of different 48 00:03:45.080 --> 00:03:51.520 things that are not animate objects. So, similar to the observer effect in 49 00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:57.270 science, there's a thing in the let's call the the art world, creative 50 00:03:57.270 --> 00:04:02.030 arts world called sinnis dance. And so what Sinnis dance is is when the 51 00:04:02.229 --> 00:04:06.710 person performing, or just existing, I guess, is a way to put 52 00:04:06.710 --> 00:04:12.340 it, change is the way they are because they know a camera is watching 53 00:04:12.419 --> 00:04:16.300 them. So my vocal delivery to you through this microphone, because it's audio 54 00:04:16.459 --> 00:04:21.300 only, is completely different than if I knew you were watching me on a 55 00:04:21.300 --> 00:04:27.129 video right now. And that's where I think we lose a lot of authenticity, 56 00:04:28.329 --> 00:04:31.089 is because you start seeing people act for the camera. They don't even 57 00:04:31.129 --> 00:04:35.850 know they're acting for the camera, but we inherently change the way we talk, 58 00:04:36.009 --> 00:04:39.839 the way we blink our eyes, hold our mouth, move our hands. 59 00:04:39.879 --> 00:04:44.279 We change all of that the moment we know a camera is on us 60 00:04:45.240 --> 00:04:48.240 and unless you're a trained television or film actor, you don't know what to 61 00:04:48.279 --> 00:04:55.589 do. So it comes across looking awkward. It's not genuine or authentic looking 62 00:04:55.629 --> 00:04:59.230 at all. It just looks dumb. It looks unprofessional, basically. So 63 00:04:59.629 --> 00:05:02.189 that's the second thing is I don't want mission creep and the second thing here 64 00:05:02.310 --> 00:05:06.660 being the observer effect or Sinnis dance, where I don't want to act differently 65 00:05:06.740 --> 00:05:11.860 or sound differently or present the different show, just because I know a camera 66 00:05:12.019 --> 00:05:17.220 is watching me. So check out those three terms mission creep, observer effect 67 00:05:18.139 --> 00:05:26.490 and SINNIS dance. That's spelled CIANE STA and see. I think it combines 68 00:05:26.610 --> 00:05:30.649 cinema and circumstance. SINNIS dance. Anyway, that's all I got. I 69 00:05:30.730 --> 00:05:34.009 just got to push through and make a new podcast every day. So this 70 00:05:34.209 --> 00:05:41.160 is today's. I'm actually feeling quite shitty and don't even want to be here. 71 00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:45.079 Not here, like I just don't want to exist. But you know, 72 00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:47.839 whatever it is, what it is, they say. Hope you have 73 00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:53.430 any great day. I'll talk to you tomorrow, Wednesday. When you feel 74 00:05:53.870 --> 00:06:21.529 lost, don't be low to differs on this will get better. Yes, 75 00:06:47.029 --> 00:06:57.310 when you feel so lost that you don't be low to differ, will get 76 00:06:59.870 --> 00:07:00.870 and now back to the wall.
