John Emotions rants about the confusion surrounding Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder, particularly mislabeling the initials #BD and #BPD. John explains that "bipolar" is one word, like bicycle or universe. John then metaphorically explains that borderline disorder is a problem with your emotion selector, while bipolar disorder is a problem with your emotion regulator.

WEBVTT 1 00:00:05.240 --> 00:00:10.429 Welcome back to by polar style, the podcast for bipolar people and those who 2 00:00:10.550 --> 00:00:21.539 love them. Doing US online at by polar stylecom Johnny motion. Thanks. 3 00:00:21.899 --> 00:00:26.859 Welcome back to buy polar style. Happy holidays. It's Sunday after Thanksgiving. 4 00:00:26.899 --> 00:00:32.500 If you were listening to this podcast, that means you did not jump off 5 00:00:32.579 --> 00:00:37.090 a bridge or get arrested for assaulting your relatives, and that's a good thing. 6 00:00:37.409 --> 00:00:40.570 So welcome back to the PODCAST. I'm glad you're here and I'm glad 7 00:00:40.609 --> 00:00:43.770 I'm here. I had a rough week last week, typically do around the 8 00:00:43.770 --> 00:00:48.130 holidays. I'm not going to get into it too much. Just appreciate everyone's 9 00:00:48.130 --> 00:00:52.479 patience on twitter and things like that. When I go am I a so 10 00:00:52.679 --> 00:00:57.560 thanks for your support and let's get on with it. So today we're going 11 00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:07.469 to talk about bipolar disorder versus borderline personality disorder. These two things get confused, 12 00:01:07.109 --> 00:01:14.269 conflated, mixed up, miss initialed all kinds of things all the time, 13 00:01:15.150 --> 00:01:19.060 and I'll go through it as kind of a an experiencer of both. 14 00:01:19.620 --> 00:01:23.060 I don't want to say a sufferer because sounds like I'm making myself to be 15 00:01:23.099 --> 00:01:27.019 a victim, although it is suffering for sure, but let's just say I 16 00:01:27.620 --> 00:01:34.769 end or both bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. So let me tell you 17 00:01:36.090 --> 00:01:38.890 just my experience. You can read up on it on, you know, 18 00:01:38.049 --> 00:01:42.489 the Mayo Clinics website or whatever, and get there to take from doctors, 19 00:01:42.569 --> 00:01:47.010 but as a person who has both, here's what it seems like. So 20 00:01:47.680 --> 00:01:53.000 try to speak in metaphors that are easy to understand. So imagine your brain 21 00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:59.200 does many, many things. One of them is selecting the correct emotion for 22 00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:05.469 any given situation. So if somebody offends you, it should select anger or 23 00:02:05.670 --> 00:02:07.710 you know, things like that. If you see a sad movie, you 24 00:02:07.789 --> 00:02:15.550 should select sorrow, sadness and things like that. That's the selector. There's 25 00:02:15.550 --> 00:02:20.860 another part of your brain that is in charge of applying the amounts, like 26 00:02:21.020 --> 00:02:23.539 the gas pedal. How much gas to give it, how much you know, 27 00:02:23.580 --> 00:02:28.780 how much emphasis to put on that particular emotion that you've chosen. So 28 00:02:29.060 --> 00:02:34.490 in the case of bipolar disorder, it's the latter. You kind of have 29 00:02:34.610 --> 00:02:38.770 a loss of the regulation. You can't control how much to step on the 30 00:02:38.849 --> 00:02:43.930 gas, so to speak. When you combine that with borderline personality disorder, 31 00:02:44.169 --> 00:02:47.639 which is picking the wrong pedal in the first place you get really mixed up 32 00:02:47.719 --> 00:02:53.199 and causes all kinds of problems. A lot of the confusion starts with the 33 00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:59.229 label itself. So this is one of my favorite rants. I get a 34 00:02:59.270 --> 00:03:04.349 lot of heat about correcting people about this on the Internet, but if we 35 00:03:04.669 --> 00:03:08.669 want to isolate these different types of problems, we have to start labeling them 36 00:03:08.830 --> 00:03:14.659 correctly. Are you ready for this? Bipolar disorder. That's two words, 37 00:03:14.699 --> 00:03:24.259 bipolar disorder. The initials are B D. Wow, borderline personality disorder. 38 00:03:24.819 --> 00:03:31.129 That's three words, B P d. So you've got bpd and you've got 39 00:03:31.330 --> 00:03:37.770 bed, two different initials, two completely different conditions. That you with them 40 00:03:37.810 --> 00:03:42.759 so far. Now to back up a step. Some people want to argue 41 00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:49.120 and say no, because I've seen bipolar disorder abbreviated as bpd, right maybe 42 00:03:49.240 --> 00:03:53.520 by an idiot, because we don't a breach. We don't like hiate bipolar, 43 00:03:53.719 --> 00:03:59.550 you don't hyphenate universal, you don't hyphenate bicycle, you don't havephnate binary, 44 00:03:59.870 --> 00:04:02.229 you don't hyphenate bipolar. It's one word. It's B is. The 45 00:04:02.270 --> 00:04:08.349 initial makes sense. In other words, the initial for bicycle is not BC, 46 00:04:09.189 --> 00:04:12.099 it's B. Be is the initial for bicycle. B is the initial 47 00:04:12.180 --> 00:04:16.300 for bipolar. Bipolar disorder is bd. Or how about just calling it bipolar? 48 00:04:16.740 --> 00:04:21.779 If you must initialize Shit, get the initials right. BPD is for 49 00:04:23.060 --> 00:04:28.730 borderline personality disorder. BP is for blood breast or so there's no bipolar, 50 00:04:28.850 --> 00:04:32.290 there's no BP for bipolar anything. Get it right. That's the first step, 51 00:04:32.449 --> 00:04:36.769 and I you know, identify your condition accurately before you start treating it. 52 00:04:38.329 --> 00:04:44.519 So get that straight. Bd is bipolar disorder. BPD borderline personality disorder. 53 00:04:45.399 --> 00:04:48.480 You got that. You got them on facebook. I think the reason 54 00:04:48.560 --> 00:04:55.189 I get wound up about this is because when I said it like really factually 55 00:04:55.269 --> 00:04:58.870 in this few words as possible, just saying hey, you know, bd 56 00:04:59.110 --> 00:05:02.829 is bipolar Di Disorder, bpd is bpd is borderline personality disorder, and that 57 00:05:02.949 --> 00:05:06.339 was in a bipolar group. So a lot of people were getting confused. 58 00:05:06.740 --> 00:05:11.740 I corrected somebody and they said, how dare you, you piece of Shit 59 00:05:11.899 --> 00:05:14.620 on your high horse, or some something to that effect. That's how I 60 00:05:14.939 --> 00:05:19.779 interpreted it and maybe my personality disorder interpreted that incorrectly, but piece of shit 61 00:05:19.899 --> 00:05:25.329 typically just has kind of one meaning. Right anyway. That's why I get 62 00:05:25.370 --> 00:05:27.930 wound up about just fucking get it right. Go Look on the Internet if 63 00:05:27.930 --> 00:05:30.649 you need to. It's like Wiki PD. That Shit. Go to the 64 00:05:30.730 --> 00:05:36.160 Mayo clinics website. Borderline personality disorder is bpd. Bipolar disorder is bed. 65 00:05:38.120 --> 00:05:42.079 Clear, clear, cool. Okay, I do this all the time. 66 00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:45.800 I like it wound up and then I have to go. But it's easy. 67 00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:49.110 In the editing software you can just you scroll out and it's like that. 68 00:05:49.269 --> 00:05:53.149 It is right there at the blank space. You Zoom in, you 69 00:05:53.269 --> 00:05:56.550 cut out the part where I need to breathe. Put it back to together. 70 00:05:57.709 --> 00:06:00.230 Call the PODCASTS. Okay, so what you've got it labeled correctly. 71 00:06:00.470 --> 00:06:04.459 Now you know which one you have. Totally understand that you might actually have 72 00:06:04.699 --> 00:06:10.259 both and they might be co mingled and it might take years and years or 73 00:06:10.339 --> 00:06:15.660 decades to unwind. That's sound scary, but you know, it's just part 74 00:06:15.699 --> 00:06:17.769 of life. It's like people with any other conditions. They take a while 75 00:06:17.769 --> 00:06:21.569 to figure out what they have and then they start working on fixing it so 76 00:06:21.610 --> 00:06:28.889 they can function in society. So the interesting thing about borderline personality disorder is 77 00:06:29.009 --> 00:06:31.529 that you don't know you have it at first. In fact, a lot 78 00:06:31.529 --> 00:06:38.079 of times you'll establish this condition as a kid through some kind of trauma or 79 00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:45.439 your environment or whatnot, you'll start to perceive the world inaccurately, let's say. 80 00:06:45.959 --> 00:06:49.589 So when people do or say things to you, your survival instincts kick 81 00:06:49.709 --> 00:06:56.310 in and you start to respond in inaccurate ways. After a while those paths 82 00:06:56.350 --> 00:07:00.470 get carved in your brain deeper and deeper and today now you have a personality 83 00:07:00.589 --> 00:07:04.060 disorder. Fortunately, borderline is not as sinister as some of the others. 84 00:07:04.300 --> 00:07:09.259 You might look at narcissistic personality disorder. That's a big one in the news 85 00:07:09.300 --> 00:07:13.620 right now. So that one's pretty nasty and don't confuse that with borderline. 86 00:07:13.779 --> 00:07:18.250 Please don't confuse that with borderline. But so if you're curious about personality disorders, 87 00:07:18.329 --> 00:07:21.769 just go look through the whole lot of them on the Internet. But 88 00:07:21.889 --> 00:07:27.250 know that the way to treat those is a lot of its dialectic behavioral therapy, 89 00:07:27.529 --> 00:07:30.560 where you talked to someone, a professional who's trained in dpt that can 90 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:35.439 kind of reflect back to you the things that you're saying and hearing through life. 91 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:40.000 So if you're hearing one of the things that I get back a lot 92 00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:46.230 is when I say things like everything or everybody or nobody or never. By 93 00:07:46.310 --> 00:07:50.629 speaking in those kind of like super harsh universal terms, you've kind of painting 94 00:07:50.670 --> 00:07:54.949 yourself into a corner for like, all, nobody ever calls me, then 95 00:07:55.029 --> 00:07:59.339 we'll fuck eventually nobody will ever call you that. That's the kind of rationale 96 00:07:59.420 --> 00:08:03.220 there. So dbt helps you break down those things, helps break down the 97 00:08:03.339 --> 00:08:07.459 negative self talk, and that's always a good thing, but they're unfortunately, 98 00:08:07.500 --> 00:08:13.209 there's no meds for borderline personality disorder. Bipolar, on the other hand, 99 00:08:13.850 --> 00:08:16.889 there's lots of medicine for that, depending on which route the doctors want to 100 00:08:16.930 --> 00:08:22.209 go. Often they start with the mania. They want to calm you down, 101 00:08:22.250 --> 00:08:24.449 they want to make sure that you're getting aid out of but it is 102 00:08:24.970 --> 00:08:31.720 they want to make sure that you're getting eight hours of sleep and that you're 103 00:08:31.720 --> 00:08:33.320 not, you know, so depressed that you want to jump off the bridge. 104 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:37.399 So that's great about bipolar. It's like, Oh, okay, there 105 00:08:37.480 --> 00:08:43.350 is actually medicinal help. The downside is the depression part of bipolars often the 106 00:08:43.389 --> 00:08:48.190 last thing treated. They often will go towards the Mendia first. They'll help 107 00:08:48.230 --> 00:08:54.750 you sleep and whatnot, but you're still depressed, unfortunately. And on the 108 00:08:54.789 --> 00:08:58.860 flip side, if you have borderline, then they're they're really are no meds 109 00:08:58.940 --> 00:09:03.580 for that part. Specifically. There might be meds for social anxiety or PTSD 110 00:09:03.659 --> 00:09:09.299 or the other things, but specifically, if it's just borderline personality disorder you 111 00:09:09.460 --> 00:09:11.529 talking about, there's not a medicine for that. You have to get therapy 112 00:09:11.570 --> 00:09:18.649 or find somebody that knows how to to speak that language. So to recap, 113 00:09:18.730 --> 00:09:26.039 borderline personality disorder to me is the inability to choose the right emotion for 114 00:09:26.279 --> 00:09:35.159 the circumstance. Bipolar disorder is the inability to govern the amount of energy I 115 00:09:35.320 --> 00:09:39.269 give that emotion for any circumstance. When you add the two, I can 116 00:09:39.350 --> 00:09:43.470 clearly be picking the wrong emotion for a circumstance and putting way too much gas 117 00:09:43.629 --> 00:09:48.830 on that fire, which makes me really difficult to live around and with for 118 00:09:50.070 --> 00:09:52.419 a long period of time. And I think a lot of people with these 119 00:09:52.539 --> 00:09:58.659 two particular mental health issues find themselves alone and isolated a lot just because it's 120 00:09:58.740 --> 00:10:03.539 difficult when the person you're talking to is not reacting the right way. If 121 00:10:03.580 --> 00:10:09.049 you say blue and they say read. You know I'm oversimplifying, but you 122 00:10:09.210 --> 00:10:13.090 get it. If the person that you're talking to is not reacting in a 123 00:10:13.210 --> 00:10:18.049 predictable way. Like it's kind of like the same way as Geez I guess 124 00:10:18.250 --> 00:10:22.080 talking to a drunk. You just don't know how they're going to respond when 125 00:10:22.120 --> 00:10:24.759 they're drunk. It's kind of the same way when a bipolar person is going 126 00:10:24.840 --> 00:10:31.720 through an episode. You just it's so unpredictable how they might reply. I 127 00:10:31.840 --> 00:10:35.190 can understand why people don't want to be around that. That said, this 128 00:10:35.389 --> 00:10:41.549 episode is about the differences between the two. So if you're going to get 129 00:10:41.629 --> 00:10:43.750 help and you feel like you're crazy, you feel like your emotions don't match 130 00:10:43.830 --> 00:10:48.950 the circumstances, definitely check into both. See if you might match up with 131 00:10:48.269 --> 00:10:56.220 borderline personality disorder, Hashtag BEPD, or if you are more into like maybe 132 00:10:56.379 --> 00:11:03.259 bipolar, Hashtag bipolar style. So that's about all I've got today. I'm 133 00:11:03.259 --> 00:11:05.490 glad we made it through the weekend.
